Sit at a campfire with the world
Published Monday, October 19, 2026
Station Chat World is a public chat where every conversation is a campfire on a 3D night globe. Anyone can light one in their city, others peek in and sit down, and when the fire's time runs out the conversation is deleted. Earlier today it had its first real hosted evening: a hospital ward group sat around one fire for an hour, sharing snacks as gifts, voting day shift vs night shift, and sending me feature ideas faster than I could write them down. Some details that might interest people here: - Messages are "postcards". Each shows the route it travelled between cities and the distance, e.g. "2 hops, 11,640 km". - Match fires for football and cricket pull live scores and goal scorers, and people can call the result before kick-off. - A moderation filter ("angel mode") is always on and can't be turned off. It catches abuse before it's shown and suggests a kinder rewording. - Groups can host a timed evening with themes, badges and their own gifts, and an automatic campfire keeper greets each guest. Stack: plain PHP 8 and MySQL on ordinary shared hosting, vanilla JS, Three.js for the globe. It's an installable PWA, with no account and no app store. It's just me plus a few helpers, and I built it with AI as a coding assistant. No signup is needed to try it.
